A Day at the Local Library I haven’t eaten yet, so I drag my partner, Anthony, with me to the cafe. It’s a small offshoot location of a local bistro a couple of blocks away, and they always have delicious pastries and seasonal drinks. We order our breakfasts and (urgently needed) caffeine over the low murmur of conversation and the occasional excited child, then find a seat where we can get to work. Most of the tables by the cafe are full, but we still find a booth with enough space for our laptops and food. I’m a regular visitor at the library, so my laptop is already connected to the free wifi. I go through my emails as I eat breakfast, passively listening to the dozens of people around me. When Anthony and I are done eating, I fill up my water bottle, and then we head upstairs to see if we can reserve one of the private study rooms. It’s supposed to be a volunteer-led event where gardeners can sort and husk donated seeds (yes, some libraries have free seeds too!). There’s no one there when I drop by, but there are a few packets of seeds, informational flyers, and plant clippings for people to take! Of course, I grab a new plant baby. Then, I head back to the study room to do some more work. When our time slot in the study room is over, Anthony and I head out to the breezeway to read among the sculptures with some incredible natural lighting. On the way, he gets distracted by the games, and I get distracted by the CDs. We browse the shelves (both library shelves and those in the on-site secondhand bookstore) and, even though I already have about six books checked out, I check out two more. With its cozy rooms, beautiful woodwork, and historic furnishings, it felt like stepping back in time. As I climbed the staircase, I imagined people heading upstairs to their bedrooms long ago. I struck up a conversation with the barista and discovered I wasn't far off! The building once housed a grocery store in the front, while the family lived in the back and upstairs. We even wondered where the kitchen might have been. Naturally, I had to learn more! Turns out, the building dates back to 1875 and is known as the Haehnel Building. Over the years, it has served as a grocery store, saloon, and neighborhood bar before becoming the charming bookstore it is today. Early voting is currently happening for this year’s general elections and, in Texas, will end on Friday, October 30, 2026. Election day will be happening on Tuesday, November 3 nationwide. One crucial way that we can make our voices and opinions heard in our communities is through voting. The people and policies we elect are important, and doing the research before voting is crucial. Researching my ballot was my biggest Curious Whisker Moment this month. I went online to find a sample ballot for my county (between federal, state, and county level elections, we had 41 items on the docket) and then to my local library to get a voter’s guide. My partner and I took an evening to read through every response and discuss our thoughts, taking notes and searching up more information as necessary to try to be as informed as possible in our decisions. The next morning, we got up before work to go vote! There was a pretty long line at the city hall, but we were still in and out in less than thirty minutes. And of course we got our celebratory “I Voted” stickers and some autumnal coffee as a treat afterward. I strongly encourage you, if you haven’t already, to go vote! Take an hour to read through the information available to you. Be curious about what you are using your voice for and why. After the August newsletter, a reader wrote to tell me about a strange sound they'd heard coming from some bushes. They couldn't figure out what kind of animal was making it—until they discovered the culprit was a catbird. A catbird? I'd never even heard of one! Naturally, I had to look it up. I found an adorable little gray bird—and then I listened to its call. Sure enough, one of its distinctive sounds really does resemble a cat mewing. The name made perfect sense! And I loved the whole thing: a mysterious sound made someone curious enough to investigate, their discovery made me curious enough to investigate, and now I'm sharing it with you. Recently, we started adding sun butter (which is like peanut butter but made of sunflower seeds) to our banana bread. But when we cut into the loaves, they were green! My coworkers and I did a bit of research and discovered that this was because of a chemical reaction. The chlorogenic acid in the sun butter reacted with the baking soda to create a green pigment called chlorophyllin. The reaction intensifies as the baked goods cool down (or are refrigerated, like we do at work), making them an even darker green over time. While unexpected, it was such a joy for me to find my favorite color in one of my favorite treats. It looked like a bumpy green cucumber growing on a vine, but I had no idea what it was. Naturally, I had to find out. It turned out to be bitter melon! I discovered that when it's still green, it's commonly used in savory dishes around the world. If it's left on the vine, though, it transforms—turning bright yellow before splitting open to reveal brilliant red seeds inside. It almost looks like something from another planet! I love moments like these because they remind me that curiosity doesn't always take us somewhere new. I’m taken back to summer camp, start humming a song about a girl and a boy in a little canoe, with the moon shining all around. Then, a vague memory of the bright planet Venus, myself and the other girls exclaiming over getting to actually see one of our solar system neighbors. A quick search confirms that it is, in fact, Venus that I see tonight. The moon’s cozy summer companion. It feels fitting, to see the hottest planet in the solar system so clearly this time of year. Did you know that one day on Venus is roughly 243 Earth days? Today is day 227 of 2026, so it’s about the same time on Venus as it is when I’m writing this, that peaceful time of night when I’m just getting sleepy and the world outside is so quiet. The perfect time to write, if I do say so myself.
