Hello! This is Elena, Director of Marketing and PR at Curious Whisker Press and daughter of founder Kimberly Welsh. Today, I want to talk a bit about what got us to the point where we have a brand-new website and a book-in-progress.

The Origins of The Adventures of Charlie the Cat

Mom first wrote The Adventures of Charlie the Cat when I was little. She worked at a Montessori school, and I would tag along to go to classes, play with fake fruit on the artificial trees in her office, and read while sprawled out on the conference room couch. On our way home, I would always ask about our cat, Charlie, and what Mom thought he did while we were gone.

Around this time, my kindergarten class did a collaborative book where each student got a letter of the alphabet and drew a picture representing a word starting with that letter. The teacher mailed our illustrations to a printer that put them together into a bound book. A few weeks later, my mom surprised me with not one book, but two. She had sent her own manuscript with illustrations to the same printer and gifted my cousins and me with the first copies of The Adventures of Charlie the Cat.

I can see my copy nestled on the shelf in my home office as I write this.

Why Now?

So why return to Charlie and his little blue car twenty years later? My mom might have a different answer to this, but I think it comes down to both of us finding our childlike wonder again.

I am in my twenties now. I’ve worked in an office, paid bills, and navigated countless other difficult and tedious parts of early adulthood. I spent the last four years since graduating college being so burned out that I stagnated and stopped caring about observing the world and interacting with it. I’ve gone through some pretty big changes this year, but in all of that change I’ve been given space to regain my curiosity.

So now I keep up my daily practice of being curious by reading voraciously, asking questions and looking for answers, signing up for random classes and community events, and trying to laugh at myself when things don’t always go as planned.

At the same time, I’ve seen my mom transform herself and her life. She’s building habits and trying new things to become a whole new version of herself. I am so proud of her. And I know that a big part of the reason she decided to return to this story is that she’s filling her creative well by taking care of herself.

We want Curious Whisker Press to be a quiet place for children and adults to ask questions. Our stories are designed to take everyday moments and turn them into adventures一because everyday moments are adventures, if you know where to look.
